Hapa? Hapa-tite? Honu?

Hapa-tite is a combination of two words: hapa and appetite. I think that it encompasses my appetite for all things food-related in life: restaurants, recipes, o-bento, cookbooks, tea, and cocktails (as well as web-design and blogging).

ha•pa (hä’pä) adj. 1. Slang. Of mixed racial heritage with partial roots in Asian and/or Pacific Islander ancestry. n. 2.Slang. A person of such ancestry.

Hapa, literally “half” in Hawaiian, was originally used as a derogatory term to describe people of biracial ancestry. Today, many multiracial individuals of Asian or Pacific Islander descent have embraced the word as a term of prideful self-identification. Although some object to the term’s appropriation and perceived misuse outside of its traditional Hawaiian context, “Hapa” has been widely adopted by the Asian and Pacific Islander multiracial communities, and even by some multiracial, non-Asians. (Taken from Hapa Voice)

Though I’ve only been to Hawai’i a few times, my father’s family is from there and has a strong relationship with the Island. I fully embrace the Hawai’ian mentality of mixing things together to get the best result, no matter the culture or source. In fact, that’s how some of the best dishes (and people ^_^) are made! Some people call America the “melting pot”, but in Hawai’i there is a dish called ‘mix plate’ that is a true representation of their mindset; Traditionally: hawai’ian pork, rice, and mac salad–all the best things in the world, combined in one place for easy eats.

Some common hawai’ian (or hapa) words that you’ll see used on this site:

  • bento/o-bento – box lunch
  • honu – hawai’ian sea turtle; a sign of good luck & part of my logo
  • mix plate – combo of mainland and hawai’ian foods
  • nori – seaweed
  • kalua pig – pork roasted under leaves, traditional hawai’ian food that is usually cooked in the ground
Hapa-tizer: first look or first bite at a new place
 Tipsy Honu – cocktail spotlight

Ratings will use a scale of “5 honus”.

Technical

A lot of the content on here is from my previous blog, discojing.com. My previous host was unreliable in more ways than one, so I moved the information over here hurriedly. In the process, some of the content has broken. If pictures or links are missing or do not work, that is why.

Current hosting is provided by DreamHost. This site runs 100% on WordPress, free software that is php based. The current theme is a modified version of the eleven40 Genesis child theme by StudioPress. Google Fonts used are Pacifico and Quicksand. The logo, styling, and all graphics on this site unless otherwise noted are created by me.
